Bagan Tengkorak (Kuala Selangor) Seafood Lunch Ride
Labour Day 1 May 2010 |
|
Mohan proposed riding on Saturday instead on Sunday as he would be away on a working trip. It been a while we last rode to Kuala Selangor for seafood. As expected, the morning traffic towards Sungai Buloh was pretty bad. We assembled at the Overhead Bridge rest stop before the turning off to Sg Buloh. I made prior reservation at Chia's Restaurant at Bagan Tengkorak, some 15 km north of Kuala Selangor. Officially, the 2 storey wooden house restaurant has no formal name. Most of the village folks are fishermen. Pretty much hidden from the outside world, only regular diners would know how to find this rustic family-run seafood restaurant. A simple platform wide enough for motorcycles connects the fishing village to the main fire road.
We arrived at approximately 10am. Chia, the sole chef and proprietor was already busy making pre-cooking preparations as he was expecting a lot of customers. Incidentally, he would cook anything as long as it's fresh sea-food caught by his fishermen neighbours.
We detoured to a nearby house to buy some dried shrimps and dried anchovies as it was still too early for lunch . Seafood products, both fresh and dried, are available on ridiculously cheap price. Onto the lunch, Chef Chia whipped up a big plate of fried meehon with crabs. Chia is always passionate about his home style cooking. To top up the lunch, we had chili fried lala, steamed fish head with Chia's secret sauce and a plateful of deep fried mantis prawns kung-po style.
It was always difficult to concentrate riding especially after a heavy lunch. The day was especially hot and I made the wrong choice of wearing full waterproof jacket.. ouch.. Never less, the ride back to Kuala Lumpur was brisk. Mohan guided pack through some fire road to Tangjung Malim. The road was relatively free of traffic and a blast to ride on. Saved for Bin who was riding an ER6N, the rest of the pack on Gs were at home on the not so smoothly-paved road. To
steer clear of highway, we detoured to Ulu Yam. Needless saying, the Ulu Yam
- Selayang road offers one of the best twisties. Saved for a brief thunder
shower some 3 km after Ulu Yam town, we had a good ride home. And my jacket
got me home dry.
