| Why bother when we can sleep 6 persons for under 150 bucks. For that we get showers and air conditioning. We can also secure our barang-barang in the room while checking out the sleepy town. As usual, we tend to over-pack. Ivan’s ZX11 is retro-fitted with gigantic panniers and top box that would make any Goldwing’s owner green with envy. I got my top box installed to my bike just a couple of days earlier. Had to wait for the custom bracket to arrive from Givi in Italy.
Phang as usual packed tons of clothes and underwears that would last for a least a week. There were a couple of places we could visit around Gerik, but we were simply too lazy to move our butts around. Chin was soon fast asleep in his chilled room. We ended up goofing the late afternoon at the rest house’s cafe drowning teh tariks and toast breads (roti bakar). We meet Mr Lim at the cafe and he recommended that we take our dinner at Soon Lee, some 3 kms away. Apparently, the restaurant serves excellent fresh steamed river fish. We were told that Mr Lim is a Penghulu. So, we trusted that his recommended restaurant could not be a bad choice. Soon Lee, as promised, was just off the main road. We ordered a plate of steamed soon hock fish (ikan hantu , Oxyeleotris marmorata), a plate of fried giant frogs and some fresh stir fried veggies. And some beer to wash down the food. Superb.. Gerik at night is pretty much a dead town with little night life to offer. Most of the local would opt to drive or ride to Pengkalan Hulu, a border town some 30 minutes away. Thailand is just a couple of minutes away.
